ADAPTATION, ENVIRONMENT, NICHE
Successful organisms are well adapted to their environment. Any environment is a complex, interactive matrix that can change suddenly. This helps us understand the high level of biodiversity in our world.

Think of the wolf and the coyote. The wolf is native to Ontario, but the coyote is a newcomer. Coyotes are moving eastward from western environments, and coexist with wolves in many areas.

Thinking about wolves and coyotes:
  • How is the wolf well adapted to Ontario’s wilderness, but not urban areas?
  • How is the coyote well adapted to Ontario’s urban and suburban areas?
  • How is the urban/suburban environment different from wilderness?
